The converter fetches live reference exchange rates from a market data source when you open it, then caches them briefly to keep the tool responsive. The displayed timestamp shows how fresh the rate is. These are mid-market reference rates, which sit between the buy and sell prices quoted in the wholesale market. They are ideal for understanding the true relative value of two currencies, but the rate you receive from a bank, card, or money-transfer service will usually differ because providers add a margin or fee.
Banks, card networks, and exchange bureaus rarely give you the pure mid-market rate. They typically add a spread, a markup on the exchange rate, and may also charge a flat or percentage fee. This is how they profit from currency conversion. As a result, the amount you actually receive can be a few percent less than this calculator suggests. Using the mid-market figure here as a benchmark helps you judge how competitive a provider's offer really is.
Exchange rates for major currencies move continuously during market hours, sometimes many times per second, in response to trading activity, economic news, interest-rate expectations, and global events. The converter reflects a recent snapshot rather than a live streaming feed, which is why a timestamp is shown. For large or time-sensitive transfers, check the rate again immediately before you transact, since it can shift between when you view it and when you commit.
Yes. The multi-amount conversion table lets you see common denominations converted at once, which is handy for estimating costs abroad or planning a travel budget. Bear in mind that when you spend on a card or withdraw cash overseas, the provider's margin and any foreign-transaction fees will apply, so build in a small buffer above the mid-market figure shown here to avoid surprises.
The tool covers a broad set of major and regional currencies, including the US dollar, euro, British pound, Japanese yen, Chinese yuan, and many Asian, Middle Eastern, and other currencies. You can convert between any supported pair and instantly swap the from and to currencies to see the reverse direction. If a currency you need is missing, the underlying rate source may not quote it reliably, in which case figures should be treated with extra caution.
