Athletes typically maintain 6 to 13 percent for men or 14 to 20 percent for women. Fitness-level body fat is 14 to 17 percent for men or 21 to 24 percent for women. Acceptable ranges are 18 to 24 percent for men or 25 to 31 percent for women. Obesity is generally defined as above 25 percent for men and above 32 percent for women. Methods of Measurement

Several methods exist with varying accuracy and accessibility. Skinfold calipers measure subcutaneous fat at specific body sites such as chest, abdomen, and thigh and use equations to estimate total body fat with accuracy depending heavily on the technician's skill. Bioelectrical impedance analysis sends a small electrical current through the body and is convenient but affected by hydration status. DEXA scans use dual-energy X-rays for highly accurate measurements but require clinical equipment. Hydrostatic weighing and air displacement plethysmography are research-grade methods. Why Body Fat Matters for Health

Excess body fat, particularly visceral fat stored around internal organs, is strongly associated with type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, sleep apnea, and chronic inflammation. Visceral fat is metabolically active and releases inflammatory compounds and hormones that disrupt insulin sensitivity and cardiovascular function. Conversely, too little body fat impairs hormone production causing amenorrhea in women and low testosterone in men, weakens immunity, and reduces bone density. Reducing Body Fat Effectively

Body Fat vs Scale Weight

The scale cannot distinguish between fat loss and muscle gain. However, genetics set tendencies rather than destiny and lifestyle factors including diet, exercise, sleep, and stress remain the primary determinants of body composition for most people. Tracking Progress Over Time

Measure body fat under consistent conditions at the same time of day, same hydration status, and using the same method. Weekly measurements are sufficient as daily fluctuations are noise rather than signal. Track trends over 4 to 8 week periods rather than reacting to individual readings.
