What BMI Actually Measures

Body Mass Index is a simple ratio: your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in metres. Developed in the 1830s by Adolphe Quetelet, it was designed as a population-level statistical tool, not an individual health diagnostic. The World Health Organization uses BMI to classify weight status: underweight (below 18.5), normal weight (18.5–24.9), overweight (25–29.9), and obese (30+). Strengths of BMI

BMI is quick, free, and requires no special equipment — just a scale and a measuring tape. It provides a useful starting point for conversations about weight-related health risks. At the population level, higher BMI correlates with increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, and all-cause mortality. For most people who are not highly muscular, BMI gives a reasonable approximation of whether their weight falls within a healthy range. Limitations and Criticisms

BMI cannot distinguish between fat mass and lean mass. Athletes, bodybuilders, and people with naturally muscular builds often register as overweight or obese despite having low body fat. Conversely, sedentary individuals with normal BMI may carry excess visceral fat — a condition called normal weight obesity or "skinny fat" that carries real health risks. BMI also does not account for fat distribution (abdominal fat is more dangerous than subcutaneous fat), age-related muscle loss, or ethnic differences in body composition. Pacific Islander and Polynesian populations naturally carry more muscle mass, making standard BMI categories less applicable.
